About British Cedar

Cedar timbers are cut from the heartwood of the log. This part of the log is naturally decay resistant and should provide a service life of around 20+ years with minimal or no maintenance if installed correctly. The natural colour is a reddish brown often with random streaks and bands of darker areas when initially cut, this will weather to a silver-grey colour in approximately 2 years. Cedar is a lightweight timber when dry and relatively soft, it is also very stable with little shrinkage during drying and little seasonal movement. Easy to work with both hand and machine tools. Care should be taken to avoid scratching and denting the timber due to its softness. Stainless steel fasteners are highly recommended to prevent staining and discolouration of the wood. Cedar has a strong, aromatic scent when being worked.
